(B) Outreach, Awareness Creation, Education and Training:
(i)   Outreach and Awareness Creation:
As the saying goes, “charity begins at home”
(1)  The University Management approved the establishment of Campus Eco-vanguard Society of Nigeria to encourage student advocacy in issues of environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation (2008).
 (2) The Centre coordinated the first academically based interschool competition on Campus. Students were requested to send in essays on the theme “Climate Change as a Global Concern”. It led to the selection of 9 outstanding students, who participated in the simulating United Nations delegates or ambassadors in the Nigerian International Model United Nations Conference (NIGIMUN 2008). The students returned home with the price of second best school in cultural display and the best student director at the Conference (2008).
(3)   The University Management approved an initiative of CCCFR in support of the tree planting campaign of the Federal Ministry of Environment by establishing a University Afforestation and Landscaping Committee to coordinate tree planting and landscaping activities in its two campuses. This is expected to gradually lead to the greening of both Campuses of the University. Currently, the committee has submitted for consideration, a report on the current situation and proposed activities necessary for achieving this objective (2008).
        
(ii) Education and Training:
The Centre collaborates with Geography Department of the University to train the following:

    1. Postgraduate student of Geography Department have been benefiting in the area of data acquisition from the Centre. The pioneering Director of the Centre supervised most of the PhDs and a number of Masters Degree graduates.
    2. In its effort to achieve reliable Disaster Risk Reduction in Nigeria (DRR) the Centre organized two National Training workshops on Disaster Management and Early warning Systems between 2004- 2007 (duration of 3 weeks).
    3. First National workshop on Climate Change and Disaster in Nigeria (2000).
    4. Annual 3-tier Certificate Course on Climate Change induced Disaster Vulnerability Assessment and Risk Reduction (DVARR) consisting of BASIC, ADVANCED and PROFESSIONAL Certificates. This is commencing in April 2009 and is tagged DVARR 2009.

(iii) Participation in National/International Workshops:

  1. West African Regional Workshop on United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) and the Role of International Character in Disaster Management organized by National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (May 2008).
  2. “Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Sustainable Livelihoods” Workshop organized by the Special Climate Change Unit of the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Heinrich Boll Stifftung (June 2008).
  3. Environment Summit, Abuja (2008).
  4. The First Consultative Forum on National Environment Action Plan (2008).

(5) Climate Change (UNFCCC) Workshop at Lokoja (August 2003).
(6) Inauguration of the National Committee on climate Change and Project Initiation Workshop on the preparation of Nigeria’s first communication to the UNFCCC at the Royal Tropicana Hotel, Kano,(1998).
(7) Nigeria Meteorological Society National Workshop, papers were invited and presented on ‘Problems of Weather and their Implication on Business Activities in Lagos’, 55pp, December 1997.

     (iv) Contribution to Publication:
 (1) Average Auspices Sustainability Science Committee Preparation of National Position on Kyoto Protocol. The Pioneering Director was a lead author/coordinator of reports from six national experts. Report was submitted in 2003.
 (2) The centre was also involved in the drafting of a National Policy on Flood and Erosion for the Federal Ministry of Environment. The Centre submitted a working document in November, 2003.
 (3) The Centre prepared a working document on Climate Prediction for the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Space Science and Technology in Abuja (2003).

(v) Roundtables /Issues Based on Discussions/Meetings:
(1) Review of Draft Climate Change National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA) organized by the special Climate Change Unit of the Federal ministry of Environment and Heinrich Boll Stifftung Foundation in Abuja (2008).
(2) Meetings with Niger State Government to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding with the University and identification of Priority Actionable Projects for implementation by the Centre and State Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources. 
(3) National Action Plan for Drought Syndicate Group meeting in Kaduna (Sept. 2001).
(4) National Flood Management Action Plan: The Centre was contacted for a meeting in Abuja by the Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management to participate in preparing an Action Plan.
(5) GEF-NSC meeting on project concept and ideas sent to FEPA, Abuja, 1998.
(6)  Meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on climate, FEPA, Abuja, 1997.
(7) Inaugural meeting of Global Environmental Facility National Steering Committee and National Steering Committee (GEF-NSC) for Nigeria (FEPA) in Abuja, 1997.
