The Centre for Preliminary and Extramural Studies (CPES) was established through a statute of the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna Governing Council on 30th July 2003. Its name at inception was the Centre for Remedial and Extramural Studies (CRES). The Centre introduced Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme in 2007. The new name (CPES) was adopted by the Senate of the University on 27th February 2008 to reflect some of the new programmes that have been introduced since the creation of the Centre. Management at its 36th Meeting held on 15th June, 2010 reviewed the programmes of the Centre considering problems related to remedying deficiencies after gaining admission into the main stream University.
