SCHOOL OF POST- GRADUATE STUDIES
Background
In February, 1987, the Honorable Minster of Education during an address to
the senate of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, emphasised the
urgent need for the University to meet its manpower need and also to
enhance its capacity to contribute to research and technological
application for national development.
This statement has since been underscored by the various pronouncements
from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, which not only place
emphasis on research but has gone further to call for a law on the
implementation of national policy on technology, the bedrock of which
is organised research, based on this development it became only expedient
for the University to develop post – graduate programmes to clear for its
staff and to engage into full post- graduate facility for general admission.
Objectives of the Post- graduate School
The main objectives of the Post – graduate Programme in the Federal
University of Technology, Minna is to develop in graduate student, the
spirit of enquiry through training in research in an atmosphere of
intellectual interdependence and individual creativity combined with a
strong sense of group cooperation.
It is also hoped that the programme will focus attention on individual
and group research in areas that will complement state and national
efforts for total Scio- economic development.
This objective will only be realizable through instruction of a deeper
understanding of elementary concepts and an increasing ability to
apply fundamental ideas to new problems. The Post- graduate Programme
of the University is therefore set up to accomplish the stated objective
including academic and practical orientation and provisions of facilities
for training and research.
For candidates, whose future careers will rely on teaching and research at

development situations in public and private sectors e.g. in government,
commercial and industrial concerns.
