FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLIGY,
MINNA, NIGERIA

MOVING THE CITADEL FORWARD
(STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2004 – 2008)
VOL. 1

( DRAFT )

FORWARD

The Federal University of Technology Minna is one of the four specialized universities of Technology established in 1983 with a mission to give effect to Nigeria’s drive for self-reliance in Science and Technology. Federal University of Technology Minna aspires to be and to be recognized as one of the top technology Universities in the country and on the African continent. This aspiration can only be fulfilled through increasing excellence in students and academic staff and its research facilities, as well as quality of community service. This can be achieved by public support especially from federal, state and local governments, private funding, collaboration with national and international organizations, as well as , public private partnerships on the development of the infrastructure and human resources.

In order to articulate this vision, academic and administrative units of the university have been galvanized between the years 2002 and 2004 o undertake a strategic planning exercise to identify and chart out the most effective way the university can best serv the objectives for which it was established and fulfill its future aspirations.
The University strategic plan captioned “Moving the Citadel Forward” seeks to build on foundation laid by he founding administrators and past administrations of the university in its twenty years existence.

The Strategic Plan identifies challenges such as skilled manpower development, economic constraints, challenged of privatization, especially those propelled by revolution in information technology and the current structural adjustment the whole educational system is facing in Nigeria. Strategic planning must necessarily identify the stakeholders in the system and seek their views and perspective especially since the successful implementation of the plan depends on inputs from every one of the stakeholders.

To realize our dreams, we must undergo a very serious transformation in te manner we run the business of education in this country. Federal University of Technology, Minna is determined to restart its mission of taking a leading role in teaching, research and community service, in the areas of Science and Technology. The strategic plan sets clear goals and benchmarks for measuring progress towards these goals in a practical and transparent manner.

As the first strategic plan of the University it took the Strategic Planning Technical Committee under he able chairmanship of Professor T. Gbodi rather longer time than expected. Furthermore, throughout the planning period, the primary stakeholder, Federal Government, was in the process of redefining its role and responsibilities in all key areas of our national life, including higher education, consequently, the team adopted a rather tentative and flexible approach in its recommendations to reflect the dynamism and fluidity of the current situation.

This plan therefore is a blue print for our future development, not only guiding us but also giving us the impetus to succeed. It is our belief that the time and resources expend in producing the plan is worth it. We will like to commend all who made the production of the plan possible, especially the Technical Committee, other members of the University Community and other stakeholders without whose contribution the plan could not have materialized. We expect the same collective resolve in the implementation of the plan in the coming years.

Professor H.T. Sa’ad
VICE-CHANCELLOR

THE UNIVERSITY’S VISION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

VISION

Federal University of Technology, Minna as a specialized University is committed to the training of skilled and innovative work that would harness the forces nature to transform Nigeria’s natural resources into goods and services to positively affect the economy and thus the quality of life of her people.

PHILOSOPHICAL DIRECTION

A multi-disciplinary approach to the study of human problems and consequently the design of solutions to them has gained prominence in recent years. It is therefore clear that an academic programme that rigidly separates the professions does often have disastrous consequences. Courses organized on this basis are not only wasteful of human and material resources, but do not appreciate the reality of the multi-disciplinary nature of human problems.

To this end, the Academic Programme of the Federal University of Technology, Minna has been deliberately oriented towards an overall goal-that of production technology which implies pragmatic application of scientific, engineering and technological knowledge as well as raising the level of organizational efficiency towards creating the physical hard wares for production, exchange, distribution and consumption.
