ACADEMIC PLANNING UNIT

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMIC PLANNING UNIT AND ITS ACTIVITIES

Before the establishment of Academic Planning Unit, its functions were under Development Office that served as forerunner which was a Registry function. Based on National Universities Commission (NUC) directive on the creation of Academic Planning Unit in the early 1980s, the University Academic Planning Unit came on board with the appointment of Principal Assistant Registrar as the officer–in–charge of Academic Planning Unit (APU) and Management Information System (MIS) which were Development Office functions. Other members of staff are; Academic Planning Officer, Computer Maintenance Officer and an office Assistant. In 1997 Prof. T.A. Gbodi of Biochemistry department became the first substantive Director of the Unit. The table below shows the list of directors and their tenure in office.

MODUS OPERANDI

The Academic planning unit discharges its responsibilities using the desk officer system. Various schools and units have desk officers assigned to them. Each desk officer covers all aspects of the unit from data collection and other official matters. Within APU, committee system is adopted as the internal mechanism for smooth running of its activities.

Also, as an expectation from Academic Planning Unit to promote quality in the performance of the core business of teaching, learning and research in the University through periodic evaluation of its academic activities, Productivity and Quality Assurance Unit (P&QA U) was created based on NUC’s directive.

The philosophy of the Unit is anchored on the need not only for continuous improvement in quality but also to continually enhance efficiency in teaching, learning and research in the University and ensure effective dissemination and publication of relevant information and knowledge.

To be a leading Academic Planning Unit in Universities setting that will ensure excellent service delivery and orderly academic development of the University in the performance of its statutory functions of teaching, research as well as public service.

MISSION

We are an efficient and effective department that will ensure the orderly development through entrepreneurship oriented training, research in current and emerging technologies, and community services with the aid of world-class tools including Information and Communication Technology to meet challenges of the 21st century.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the unit are to:

  1. Ensure the provision of conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning and research among staff and students.
  2. Ensure efficient and effective utilization of academic resources.
  3. Ensure compliance with the NUC guidelines on all academic activities.
  4. Ensure that the University conforms to international academic standards and attains good ranking.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ACADEMIC PLANNING

The University’s Academic Planning Unit is an administrative structure established as an integral part of the office of the Vice Chancellor. The Unit is charged with the responsibility of providing guidance for the orderly, balanced and qualitative academic development of the University in the performance of its statutory functions such as to achieve quality output of teaching, research and community service. For effective service delivery and quality leadership, the NUC has advised that the unit be headed by a Director with minimum qualification of a Ph.D. However, the unit may be credibly headed by a career planner.

The Academic Planning Unit is expected to collate, manage and interprete data to guide the academic development of the University and to ensure compliance with Government policies notably, the NUC Minimum Academic Standards, the University statutes as they relate to academic matters and other academic requirements of the Senate.

The Director of Academic Planning reports directly to the Vice - Chancellor to whom the DAP is responsible for administration of the unit.

FUNCTIONS OF ACADEMIC PLANNING

The Academic Planning Unit is a centre responsible for academic development of a University through its planning and quality assurance functions. The functions of the Academic Planning Unit are as follows:

  1. Preparation of University annual recurrent budget in collaboration with the Bursary and the Budget unit and with the cooperation of the other Departments and Units;
  2. Projection of student enrolment figures and corresponding staff strength;
  3. Performance analysis of the University’s budget.
  4. Computation of full-time equivalents (FTE) for all programmes.
  5. Preparation of University calendar for stable academic delivery.
  6. Initiating and maintaining a database of statistics on students and staff for purpose of planning, budgeting, and other requirements.
  7. Collection, analysis and interpretation of data from the relevant departments/Units and University annual statistical trends
  8. Providing periodic statistics to the Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, National Manpower Board, Federal Bureau of Statistics, private sector organizations, NGOs and individual researchers on demand.
  9. Provision of information to the University management on various University operations for internal planning by the University.
  10. Publication of University records, statistics and reports as demanded.
  11. Documenting and storing information on academic programmes of the University.
  12. Coordination and review of the University curricula in line with NUC policy and trends in the academic world.
  13. Ensuring that the University operates within its Strategic Plan for coordinated development.
  14. Working with faculties and departments to prepare, review and monitor their academic plans and identify areas of potential development.

The strategic plan document is a working document of the university that shows the plans the university has over a period of time both on short and long term. This document also shows the steps and strategies for which the school will achieve these plans.

The academic brief documents shows the academic content of various academic programmes run by the university that is, the course structure, synopsis and credit load of various programmes in the school.

The annual report document as the name implies shows the activities of various departments; both academic and non academic in the university
