FUTMINNA DONATES BOOKS TO UNIJOS ...This Is An Outstanding Demonstration of Solidarity –UniJos VC

The donation was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji FAS, FNSBMB, represented by the University Librarian, Dr. Jubril Attahiru Alhassan during a courtesy visit on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 to the Management of the University of Jos to commiserate with them over the incident.

Speaking before presenting the books, Prof. Akanji expressed FUT, Minna heartfelt sympathies with the university over the colossal loss of its library books and equipment that were destroyed during the inferno, describing it as a national calamity.

The VC disclosed that the incident was a big loss not only to University of Jos but to the entire nation, adding that a university library is a centre of civilization of all culture because it is a custodian of knowledge.

“When a library is burnt, it is like a culture is destroyed. It is not easy to re-build a lost library,” the VC noted.

He disclosed that the University Librarian made a recommendation to Management to assist the University of Jos after the fire incident, which was approved in the spirit of brotherliness “because when your brother is disturbed, you are also disturbed.”

He expressed gratitude to University of Jos for training some of its library staff in the past, disclosing that the impact of the training is now been felt in the institution’s library.

Responding after receiving the books, the Vice-Chancellor of UniJos, Prof. Seddi Sebastian Maimako applauded FUT, Minna for coming to the aid of the institution. He added that the university is encouraged by the kind gesture.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed. On behalf of Council, Senate, staff and students, we appreciate this token. It is not just small as you think, it is the idea of felicitation and identification to a person that is in need,” the VC stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of UniJos who was represented by the University Librarian, Dr. Stephen Akintunde, assured FUT, Minna delegation that the books would be properly channeled and classified for the use of students.

Prof. Maimako revealed that the University library is host to six faculties, stating that the institution lost over sixty percent of its books and equipment to the inferno while thanking God that no life was lost during the incident.

He disclosed that the Federal Government through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has approved N729 million for the renovation of the library and construction work would soon commence after the bidding process.

He further stated that since the fire incident, the university had received donations from several spirited individuals and organisations within and outside the country.

Prof. Maimako noted that the donation by FUT, Minna is an outstanding demonstration of solidarity, while stating that the University name would be highlighted on the UniJos honour list on their website.

“What FUT, Minna has done today is generational because you are promoting scholarship in the country. Kindly express our appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the University for this gesture.”

The VC used the occasion to appeal to corporate bodies and individuals to emulate FUT, Minna gesture by coming to the aid of the university.

The University of Jos has launched a campaign tagged: Beauty from Ashes: Rebuilding the University of Jos Library aimed at raising funds, relevant books and
periodicals to get the library back on track.

The fire, which was blamed on an electrical fault, led to the loss of more than half of the books and equipment at the library.

FUT, Minna delegation was later taken round different sections of the University library at the temporary site, along Bauchi road.
