The Governor gave this commendation yesterday at the grand finale of the 3rd Entrepreneurship Week titled: Entrepreneurship: A Major Tool for Technological Advancement in Nigeria organized by the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business Studies, School of Entrepreneurship and Management Technology (SEMT) held at the University Auditorium, Main Campus.

Alh. Bello, represented by the Niger State Head of Service, Alh. Yabagi Alhaji Sule stated that some institutions in Nigeria only offer entrepreneurship as a course, adding that FUT, Minna decision to dedicate a department for entrepreneurship programme is highly commendable.

“Entrepreneurship education is a lifelong process that we need to embrace, starting as early from the elementary school and progressing through all levels of education, including adult education; it is the only way to prepare our youth and adults to succeed in the present entrepreneurial economy”, the Governor disclosed.

The Governor said with the laudable benefits of entrepreneurial studies in Nigeria, that lecturers and instructors in other departments should be inculcated into developing understanding and capacity for pursuit of entrepreneurial behaviours, skills as well as attributes in their teaching.

Speaking earlier at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji FAS, FNSBMB, congratulated the department for organizing the event, saying that the University Management are proud of the department’s achievements.

Prof. Akanji who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Oluwole Olakanmi Morenikeji said FUT, Minna is the first University in Nigeria to accord entrepreneurship a department in line with the mission of the institution.

Prof. Akanji stated that by introducing the Entrepreneurship Students’ Savings and Investment Cooperative Society (ESSICS) the department had scored another first and urged students of the department to take advantage of the Scheme to make their business ideas a reality while expressing optimism that in no distance time the Cooperative Society would be quoted on the Nigeria Stock Exchange.

“You are a pride to us and we pledge to do everything possible to support you so that you will succeed in all your endeavours”, the VC disclosed.

The VC said through TETFUND support the University is constructing a lecture theatre for the School of Entrepreneurship and Management Technology and that before the end of the week a Hilux van would be delivered to the department of Entrepreneurship and Business Studies.

In her welcome address, the HOD, Entrepreneurship and Business Studies, Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Adeyeye expressed appreciation to all the invited guests for honouring the department’s invitation.

Dr. Adeyeye said this year’s event was with a difference because the department has been able to impact on youths of the communities around the University through vocational and skill acquisition programme.

The HOD thanked the University Management for their support to the department while noting that the departmental programme would be sustained even after the tenure of the present Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akanji accompanied by other Principal Officers of the University had earlier on flagged off a billboard on dress code mounted beside the University gate at the Main Campus. The billboard was renovated by the department of Entrepreneurship and Business Studies as part of its community development service for 2017.

It will be recalled that the billboard is a Leave-A-Legacy project donated by the 2012 final year students of the University.

Other activities held during the one week long event include; carnival, skills acquisition programmes, entrepreneurship lectures in some selected secondary schools in Minna. Others are seminar tagged Breakthrough stories by young entrepreneurs and the business model competition for FUT, Minna students.
