SSTE HOLDS 5TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji, FNSBMB, FAS stated this on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 during the opening ceremony of the 5th Annual International Conference of School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE), titled: “Enhancing Science And Technology Education In A Dwindling Economy.” The event took place at the CPES Hall, Bosso Campus of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor who said that the conference theme is very apt, urged the government to design specific policies on Science and Technology Education and ensure its implementation and sustainability to promote science and technology in view of the present economic situation of our country. He further encouraged more Nigerians to study science and technology.

Speaking at the event, the Dean SSTE, Prof. Bernard Atsumbe, highlighted science and technology as the key to Nigeria’s transformation, adding that Nigeria is ranked among the 20 strongest economies in the world and has the largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa. “These achievements may be short lived if the country doesn’t urgently invest substantial resources into science and technology and key sectors of the economy,” he said.

Prof. Atsumbe who wished the participants a successful deliberations expressed optimistism that the conference would provide relevant answers that will enhance science and technology in a dwindling economy like ours. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor and his Management team for their endless support.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Kriek Jeanne, a professor of science education from Institute of Science and Technology Education, University of South Africa (UNISA), Pretoria pointed out the need for teachers to follow the trends of technology in their methodology of teaching. According to her, researches have shown that students who use computer moderately perform better than those who rarely do. She charged the scientists and technologists to have “driven question” that is “what can I do for my community?”

The Deputy Dean, School of Science and Technology Education and Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Gambari Isiaka, thanked the University Management and other guests for finding time to grace the occasion.
