TRIBUTES GALORE AS COUNCIL ORGANISES SEND-OFF IN HONOUR OF PROF AKANJI . I Will Be A Worthy Ambassador of FUTMinna – Prof Akanji

of the University, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji, FNSBMB, FAS amidst pomp and utmost gaiety in respect of his contributions to the development of the institution.

Speaking at the impressive ceremony, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Prof. ‘Femi Odekunle said the immediate past Vice-Chancellor had reasons to be grateful to God because not all professors would have opportunity to be Vice-Chancellor, adding that it is a day of joy for Council to honour him.

“You are lucky because you have finished two terms as Vice-Chancellor of a private and public universities and you are still looking young”, the Pro-Chancellor said.

Prof. Odekunle stated that the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University should be happy that people are congratulating him now because he worked for the good of the University despite the agitation that greeted his appointment.

“We are happy with you because you are blessed. Congratulations are due only after a successful tenure,” he reiterated.

The Pro-Chancellor disclosed that it is uncommon in Nigerian universities for a new Vice-Chancellor to organize send-off party for his predecessor and commended Prof. Abdullahi Bala, FSSSN, for insisting that the immediate past VC should be honoured without any delay.


In his remarks at the event, the new Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bala applauded Prof. Akanji for thrusting the University into international recognition and for advancing the fortunes of the institution.


Extolling the sterling qualities of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, the Dean, School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE), Prof. Ben Atsumbe described Prof. Akanji as a humble and purpose-driven leader who is always ready to provide counselling to people.


Prof. Atsumbe disclosed that Prof. Akanji’s simple life style is worthy of emulation and thanked him for encouraging him and other professors to deliver their inaugural lectures. He further stated that the entire University community would miss him and wished him well in his future endeavours.

On his part, the Dean, School of Life Sciences, Prof. Olumide Falusi said he has known Prof. Akanji right from his undergraduate days at the University of Ilorin and described him as a father and an embodiments of hard work, discipline and tenacity of purpose.

He stated that he was not surprised when Prof. Akanji was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the University and commended him for impacting many lives.

The age-long saying that rest is indeed sweet after labour can aptly describe the mood of the immediate past VC of the University. In his response, Prof. Akanji expressed appreciation to the University Council for honouring him, adding that he would forever be grateful to the University for allowing him serve as Vice-Chancellor.

The immediate past VC said FUT, Minna is ahead of many universities in Nigeria in terms of administration and service delivery, noting that many issues that had been resolved in the University, some institutions are still battling with it.

The don stated that FUT, Minna is already on the path of greatness and admonished everybody to work for the good of the University.

“We are making tremendous progress here in FUT, Minna and I urge you all to continue to work for the development of the University. You should support the new Vice-Chancellor to succeed in office by doing your duties and allowing him to do his own work also,” Prof. Akanji advised.

“I must have made some errors during the course of my stewardship as Vice-Chancellor of the University, I regret such errors and I take responsibility for them. They are not errors from my heart rather from my head,” he enthused.

Prof. Akanji further stated that based on the achievements of the University in all facets, he has received delegations from many Universities who are pleading with him to assist them to rejuvenate their international office and urged the University to sustain the tempo because many institutions are following the University’s progress.

In his vote of thanks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Oluwole Olakanmi Morenikeji thanked Council, Management and other staff of the University for gracing the occasion.

“We are grateful to God for this great day because Prof. Akanji came to FUT, Minna alive and we have returned him alive to his family after five years”, he stated.
The DVC Academic wished the immediate past VC God’s blessings in his future endeavours and wished guests safe trip back to their various destinations.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of gift to Prof. Akanji by the Pro-Chancellor.
