Prof. Jaiye Jehoshaphat Dukiya made the charge when he presented the 65th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna titled “Leveraging Advances in Transport Development: To Where is Nigeria Heading,” held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the Caverton Lecture Theatre, Main Campus.

He recounted the development of road transport in Nigerian dating back to 1904 when Lord Luggard attempted the construction of road linkages around the country adding that automobiles have made great contributions to the growth of modern society from a primitive one to a highly industrialised society.

“The inimitable goal of transportation is to overcome space, which is a function of a variety of human and physical constraints such as distance, time, political system and topography,” Prof. Dukiya said.

Stating his contribution to knowledge, the don who is the current Director, Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRM & DS) revealed that in the last 15 years, his research efforts have been focused on spatial interaction and adoption of automated transportation planning and management.

The Professor of Urban and Regional Planning called for the coverage of all the major urban centres and highways in the country with current cadastral maps that are geo-reference as most urban centres have no definite description of location and defined road networks.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in conjunction with other relevant government agencies, he said, should convene a standing technical advisory panel comprising individuals with background in the disciplines central to design, development, and safety assurance of automotive electronics systems, including software and systems engineering, human factors and electronics hardware.

Prof. Dukiya said the panel should be consulted on relevant technical matters that arise with respect to all of the agency’s vehicle safety programmes, including defect investigation processes and research needs assessments.

The lecturer also stressed the need to set a deadline in which all government agencies and institutions will have to switch to the use of made in Nigeria vehicles, and be committed to it, while criminalising vehicle smuggling activities.

In his address the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, while congratulating the lecturer, described the lecture as educative and informative. He acknowledged all dignitaries present at the lecture as well as the large turnout of the audience both from the University community and the town at large.
