The event which held on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Zuma Rock Golf resorts, Abuja- Kaduna Road, was a reunion of sorts filled with sweet memories and camaraderie as Prof. Bala, his childhood friends and school mates bantered as they recalled their days in school.

A Committee of Friends had put together the lecture, with the topic: Uses and Abuses of the Social Media, which was masterfully delivered by Dr. Abubakar Alhassan of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano.

In the lecture, Dr. Alhassan described the social media as a double edged sword with many good sides and ills as well.

He explained the various uses and abuses of the social media. Some of the solutions he proffered to the abuses were: self-discipline among users, setting of usage limit, quitting most groups, searching for news from the websites of the desired news media instead of social media and being ethical.

He also warned social media users to beware of the cyber crimes act, violation of which has stiff penalties.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Yahaya Ahmed Iyaka who delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the University, extolled the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership qualities. He commended Prof. Bala for his focus and ability to inspire.

There were also goodwill messages from the honoree’s old classmates, members of the Dawaki Community in Suleja and Bosso community among others.

The University Bursar, Mrs. Hajara Kuso Abdullahi who attended the same secondary school (Federal Government College, Minna) with the VC, presented an award to the honoree. Guests erupted in laughter when she jokingly said they were not presenting the plaque to the VC but to “Senior Bala.”
In his response, Prof. Bala noted that his first year in office has been rewarding as he has been able to attract funds to the University and effect many changes.

He disclosed that the successes would not have been possible without the support of members of the community as most of the help the University received were facilitated by them.

The VC assured the organisers and all stakeholders that he would not take the social capital which their support represents for granted as he intends to use such for the good of FUT, Minna and Nigeria.

The VC thanked members of the University community, the Suleja community and his family for their support.

Dignitaries at the well-attended lecture were the Hon. Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Alh. Abubakar Bawa Bwari; Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly, Hon.
