The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, has declared a one-day workshop open to address the problem of transportation in the campus and the society at large.

The workshop which was organized by the Research Team of the Department of Civil Engineering, FUT, Minna with the theme: “Development of an Advanced Public Transportation System for Captive Commuters on Urban Arterials in Minna, Nigeria.” The event took place on Monday, October 28, 2019 at the Chemical Engineering Hall, Main Campus.

Declaring the workshop open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, represented by the Registrar of the University, Mr. Amos Kolo, said that people knew the importance of transportation system, adding that the new research project would help reduce students stress on transportation in the University, especially from Bosso to Gidan Kwano and from Gidan Kwano to Bosso Campuses.

He noted that if the research should be expanded, it would not only help the students, but would also help staff coming from town to the Main Campus.

Mr. Kolo stated that Management is ready to support the research work in whatever way possible and hoped that the host community would benefit from the research work.

Speaking earlier, the Principal Researcher/Team Leader, Prof. David Jimoh said that the University is growing and cannot accommodate all the students, hence, some of them reside in Gidan Mangoro, Dama, Pkongo and Bosso area.

The research work according to him aimed at efficiency and effective transportation system between Bosso and Gidan Kwano because the present transportation system is faced with challenges as students are complaining of missing tests or lectures due to poor transportation system.

Prof. Jimoh pointed out that the research work on transportation system would help to have a system base on the world developed system of transportation that would give the running time, number of buses that would shuttle between Bosso to Gidan Kwano to ease the current delayed.

The project was sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), under the National Research Grant. The research team members are: Prof. O. David Jimoh, Dr. O. O. Adeleke, Department of Civil Engr. University of Ilorin; Dr. S. Kolo, Department of Civil Engineering and Engr. Lukman Ajayi.

Giving his vote of thanks, Dr. Adeleke, appreciated TETFund for sponsoring the project and thanked the University Management for their support and cooperation.
He added that if the research project is completed, it would serve as a model to other institutions in Nigeria.
