CHANCELLOR’S KIDS CUP: GARATU, HILLTOP LIFT THROPHIES

Garatu Primary School, Minna and Hilltop Model Secondary School, Minna have emerged the champions of the 2nd Edition of Founders’ Day Chancellor’s Kids Cup. The Kids football championship final was played on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Federal University of Technology Football Pitch, Main Campus.

During the contest, Garatu Primary School defeated Gidan Kwano Primary School with a lone goal while Hilltop Model Secondary School, won their counterparts from Abdullahi Dada Secondary School through a penalty shootout. Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna Prof. Abdullahi Bala, FSSSN, stated that the competition was a way of incorporating the host community in to the events of the Founders’ Day Celebration. According to him, the Kids competition will serve as a medium of showcasing the talents of the kids and bringing out potential stars that will represent the country in some years to come.

Prof. Bala, further stated that the competition will create an avenue for the kids to come into the University, see the community, interact with students who are already in the system and see professors they have been hearing about. He added that this idea will inspire the young minds to seek to further their education into higher institutions. He assured that he will make necessary consultation on the possibilities of incorporating the female kids into the contest next year.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, University Sports Committee, Prof. Rasheed Ojutiku, stated that the contest is part of the University’s corporate social responsibility to the host community and a means of reviving sporting activities at the grassroots level. Prof. Ojutiku stated that this year’s competition is an upgrade over last year. According to him, only 18 primary schools were captured last year, but this year’s event mobilized 30 participating schools with 14 primary schools and 16 secondary thereby featuring up to 52 matches.

The Pro-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Odekunle, performed the ceremonial kick off for the final match. He also presented Certificates and trophies to the winners.
