Late Prof. Alfred Late Prof. Ogunbajo
At the 48th Regular Senate meeting of the Federal University of Technology, Minna held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, a valedictory session which was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musibau Adewumi Akanji, FNSBMB, FAS, was observed in honour of two late Professors: Alfred Iheanyi Hekoronye of Food Science and Nutrition Department who died on March 16, 2017 at the age of 69 and Mashood Idowu Ogunbajo of Geology Department who died on February 24, 2017 at the age of 70.
Late Prof. Mashood Idowu Ogunbajo joined the services of the Federal University of Technology, Minna on the 1st October, 1990 as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geology, after which he was appointed as the Head of Department of Geology on September 1, 1991, a post which he held till August 30, 1993.
Late Prof. Ogunbajo impacted positively on the Department in the areas of teaching, research and community services. He also contributed immensely to manpower development by producing many geology graduates at Masters and Ph.D levels.
The late Prof. Ogunbajo was a member of the University Senate and also many University Boards and Committees during which he contributed to the development of the University in general. He also published many articles in reputable journals and books which has given him recognition within and outside the country.
Before his demise, late Prof. Ogunbajo was on a contract appointment with the University.
The Head, Department of Geology, Dr. Idris Abdullahi, while eulogizing the late Prof. Ogunbajo said he would be greatly missed as he impacted so much on the staff as well as the department. He said late Prof. Ogunbajo was instrumental to employment most of the staff in the department. He prayed that God should grant him eternal rest.
Similarly, late Prof. Alfred Iheanyi Hekoronye joined the services of FUT, Minna on July 8, 2011 on contract appointment as a Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition until July 7, 2016 when he fell ill.
Late Prof. Hekoronye published several books and technical articles in food science and technology; he was also Head, Food Technology, PNG University of Technology LAE South Pacific Islands and also the HOD, Food Science and Technology, UNN 1995-1999. He was a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology.
Some of the late scholar’s colleagues eulogized them. The Head of Department, Food Sciences, Dr. Julian Anuonye said late Prof. Hekoronye was academically outstanding and he taught him most of what he knew on Food Science. He said the late professor was one of the first Nigerians to publish an international textbook on Food Science.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akanji while briefing the Senate, prayed to God to grant the families of the departed the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
