In view of the conducive atmosphere of the University which has necessitated the hosting of several national events in recent times, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Federal University of Technology, Minna Chapter has hosted the 2017 Universities Trade Group council meeting of the Union.
The 2-day event took place at the Centre for Preliminary and Extra-Mural Studies Hall, Bosso Campus from Tuesday 11th to Wednesday 12thApril, 2017.
Welcoming delegates to the event, NASU Chairman, FUT, Minna Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Barde said the hosting right for the meeting was given to FUT, Minna based on the burning desire for change, adding that by hosting the event, the Chapter has demonstrated confidence in democratic succession as the preferred route to office.
Comrade Barde disclosed that the choice of the National Executive to approve the hosting mandate for FUT, Minna was deliberate to showcase the reward for hard work, transparency and fairness in all human endeavours.
The Chairman warned elected leaders of the Union not to betray the confidence reposed in them by members while noting that no matter the circumstances, loyalty, mutual respect and total commitment to the course of the Union must be kept sacrosanct.
On his achievements as NASU Chairman in the last two years, he said that the Union negotiated for the refund of 10% over deduction of earned allowance, promotions and change of cadre for its members, sales of NASU abandoned vehicle, review of 1983 conditions of services of junior staff and scheme of service. Others include; promotion of the rights and privileges of its members in various disciplinary committees and sales of consumables to members on loan at subsidized rate during fasting.
He commended the University Management for being union friendly and providing free accommodation for its National Officers during the meeting.
In his address, the Deputy President and Chairman UTG, Comrade Godfrey Okeke Ugwu congratulated FUT, Minna for hosting the event and expressed delight with the University Management for extending hands of fellowship to the University Chapter of the Union.
On the state of the economy, he urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to rescue the naira and called for prompt commencement of operation of the Nigerian Universities Pension Company (NUPENCO).
The Deputy President commended the Federal Government for inaugurating the renegotiation Committee on the 2009 FGN/NASU agreement. He expressed hope that the Committee would address the ailing critical infrastructure in the Nigerian universities.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji, FNSBMB, FAS said FUT, Minna is a home of responsible and responsive unions, adding that the University Management believed that through effective unionism the issue of check and balances would be achieved.
The VC who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the institution, Prof. Suleiman Sadiku stated that Management has been working closely with all the unions in the University.
“We have produced National President for different unions and most unions prefer FUT, Minna as a place for their meetings”, the VC revealed.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musbau Adewumi Akanji, the Registrar, Mrs. Victoria Nnawo Kolo, the University Librarian, Dr. Jubril Attahiru Alhassan, the Bursar, Mrs. Hajara Abdullahi Kuso and other stalwarts of the Union were given awards at the plenary session in honour of their contributions and support to the Union.
