The Federal University of Technology, Minna male handball team were the toast of fans at the just concluded Zone A NUGA preliminaries held at the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State.

The team left many fans agape with their scintillating performance, team work, goal scoring prowess and tactical formation during the zonal preliminaries.

The handball team defeated the Zone’s Champions - Bayero University, Kano 18-17 in their first match to send fear through the spines of other opponents at the games. The team came from behind in the first half to take full control of the match and restricted BUK’s late onslaught to snatch a point from the match.

The second match of the group saw FUT, Minna making a statement of intent about their determination to take over the zonal title from the holders, as they took Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to the cleaners with an emphatic win to the delight of fans at the Handball Court. The University’s handball team dominated the match from the blast of the whistle to end ABU, Zaria hopes of participating at the main NUGA. The explosive encounter ended 18-9 in favour of FUT, Minna.

In an exclusive chat with Campus News, the Technical Adviser/Coordinator of the team, Dr. Omotayo Alabi, HOD, Educational Technology, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the team at the games and commended the players for playing according to instructions.

The Technical Adviser stated that the team is still work in progress, adding that more players would be poached to beef-up the team ahead of the NUGA games slated for Makurdi.

He disclosed that intense training would commence immediately after the pre-NUGA while expressing optimism that the team will win a medal at the main NUGA.

FUT, Minna handball team will be looking to surpass their quarter-final ouster at the last edition of the NUGA games in OAU where they loss 22-17 to the University of Nigeria, Nigeria. The female team will also represent the University in Makurdi.

FUT, Minna and BUK will represent the zone at the 25th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) to be hosted by the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State from 19th—30th April, 2017.
