Immediate past Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and Chairman, AD-Team Ltd, Engr. Dr. Felix Atume stated this while delivering his keynote address at the maiden international conference of the Civil Engineering Department, Federal University of Technology, Minna.

The conference with the theme: “Infrastructure Development In The Context of Contemporary Economic Challenges,” held between Wednesday 7, - Friday, November 9, 2018 at the PTDF Chemical Engineering Complex, Main Campus.

The seasoned Engineer disclosed that according to the Nigerian Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIMP) Nigeria needs USD 3.1 trillion within 30 years to upscale her infrastructure.

He pointed out that infrastructure drives development and from the success story of PPP in other climes, Nigerian government must partner with the private sector for the development of the country.

Engr. Atume disclosed that the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’S) which include, no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well being, quality education, gender equality, clean water, affordable and clean energy, industry innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, climate action among others cannot be achieved without infrastructure and the government can not provide the desired infrastructure necessary to promote economic development in Nigeria except with the concept of PPP.

Engr. Atume said that for the success of PPP in Nigeria, government to a large extent must be committed and insist on effective regulation, adding that government also needs to invest in the judiciary in order to settle commercial disputes promptly for us to regain the confidence of the investing public and international community.

At the end of his presentation, the keynote speaker urged the Vice-Chancellor to put forward findings from the conference to the government to implement them.

Declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Yahaya Iyaka welcomed the participants to the conference and congratulated the Department of Civil Engineering for achieving the feat of organizing an international conference, adding that with the caliber of keynote speaker, he expects the conference to be of international standard not only in title but also in context.

Prof. Bala noted that the importance of Civil Engineering cannot be over emphasized because we see the effect of Civil Engineering in the environment.

He hoped that at the end of the conference, findings will be discussed and global issues solved to better the society.
